New Karl Strauss Tasting Room

In honor of the grand opening of Karl Strauss’ new tasting room at main brewery in Pacific Beach last night, I wanted to share a bit about our ‘sneak peek’ experience hanging out there a couple weeks ago. Here’s a little background: for the first time in its 20-plus year history, Karl is opening up its brewery to the general public with a tasting room so people can enjoy the beer right where it’s brewed. Unlike the brewery restaurants, this is simply a brew tasting room… with some very sweet details. For example, the food truck docking station out front, cyclist-friendly bike racks, and spacious outdoor beer garden. The tasting room features a 20-tap custom bar, which will include the staples as well as specialty releases and brewery-only limited batches.

The tasting room is located off the Balboa/Garnet exit in PB (making me wish I was still at UCSD!), near the base of the Rose Canyon bike trail (hence the bike racks). One thing we found especially awesome was the ability to see into the quality control lab and bottling line – and since it was shut down for the celebration when we went, we will definitely want to make a trip back to see it all in action! Our only complaint was that it’s not closer to home…

Here are some pics of our visit.
